Philosophy â⬠Is Memory Reliable Essay
How would I prove that my memory or reasoning processes are reliable? There really is no good way to answer this question. My first thought was, well that should be easy, because I can prove my memory is reliable by the fact that I remember where class is every day that I show up. If I can remember where the classroom is, that must show my memory is reliable. But then I realized that Iââ¬â¢m relying on a memory to come up with that example. This makes the question seem like a paradox to even try and answer, because in order to figure out if there is a way to prove my memory is reliable, I must use my memory to recall memories that might apply, and I must also assume the accuracy of the memories I might draw from as example. I cannot prove memory reliability by using logic drawn from the assumption that the memories I used are reliable. This seems to create a fallacy in logic before even getting started. In reality it seems easy to say that yes, although our memories are sometimes wrong, generally more often than not they are right. We know this because we recall from our memory many times each day to do the simplest tasks. If our memory was that flawed, we would be unable to survive on a day to day basis. Where do I get water? How do I get food? How do I drive a car? While this does show that we are able to rely on our memories to complete everyday tasks, it doesnââ¬â¢t prove our memory is consistently true. We cannot be sure that any memory weââ¬â¢ve ever had actually happened exactly the way we remember it (unless material sources are used, like video or pictures to back up the memory) because of a multitude of problems with memory like delusion and distortion. Memories can be easily manipulated and altered in many different ways, from simple re-telling where little details may be unwittingly changed each time a memory is told, to the power of suggestion in which an entirely false memory can be implanted into a persons mind and believed to be true by that person. Although these memories may seem very real to us, even to the point where we are willing to fight for their reliability, they are still factually false. This actually happens a lot! Although it practice these issues with memory exist, they are mostly ignored because we typically use other methods beyond memory alone to help collaborate what we remember. We are validated by others who share the same memory, photos, ect. So although in a philosophical world it seems impossible to find solid clear evidence that memory is truly reliable, but it seems silly, and even dangerous to continually doubt that memory can be reliably called upon. For example, I decide to cross the road without looking both ways because I cannot be sure that being hit by a car would kill me. I might have seen and heard of people being killed by cars in the past, but if I doubt my own memory how could I be sure that speeding cars have the potential to actually kill people. Because of this seemingly correct logic I might then be hit by a car and become a victim of what many would say is clear common sense. So although there is no good way to prove the reliability of memory, we must still rely on it all the same.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Essay
Many people believe that ââ¬Å"A healthy body makes a healthy mindâ⬠. I hesitate on the word ââ¬Å"makeâ⬠ââ¬â Assuming a healthy mind means something like integrity, happiness and optimistic attitude, I believe that people who have a healthy body usually also have a healthy mind, but a healthy body is not necessarily for a healthy mind. The players in professional sports leagues are probably the most physically healthy people in the world; however itââ¬â¢s not uncommon to hear news of their troubles, such as crimes or family violences. A healthy body shares some common causes with a healthy mind. The process of pursuing a healthy body requires good discipline. Itââ¬â¢s easy to exercise for one day, but one must endeavor to keep exercising to stay in a physically healthy condition. Long distance running is a well known way of having a healthy body. To prepare to run a full marathon, one has to repeat many moderate or long distance running practices. Itââ¬â¢s such a painful process that one likely to give up if he/she doesnââ¬â¢t have strong will power. If a person has such will power, itââ¬â¢s no surprise that this person can be successful at other things. A person achieves many life goals is likely to have a healthy mind. A healthy body can be a factor of a healthy mind: physically healthy people usually have more energy to work on things they care about, therefore have a better chance to enjoy their lives. In contrast, physically unhealthy people may be disturbed by their health issues. Their concerns can distract them from doing things that would make them happy. A scientific study also tried to discover the secret relation between exercise and the mind. Scientists found a chemical substance called endorphins [1], which can be reproduced by human body during exercise, excitement, spicy food tasting, etc. It can interact with some other substances in the human body to generate a feeling of well-being. A well-known effect of endorphins is ââ¬Å"runners high,â⬠which is said to occur when people exercise so strenuously that their bodies reach the threshold of endorphin release. Scientists are still not sure of the amount of endorphins the human body can generate or how much it impacts a humanââ¬â¢s mind. But at least most of the running enthusiasts I know are all very nice people. The ex-Google VP, the founder of Google China, a role model of many Chineseà young students and entrepreneurs, Kaifu Lee, was recently diagnosed with cancer. He said he should have spent less time on work and more time on doing things that would have kept him healthy, especially sufficient sleep and exercise. This tells us that at the end of the day, fame and wealthy will not make people happy if they donââ¬â¢t have a healthy body. We should get away from the chair and the computer some time everyday to exercise. It might not make us better people, but itââ¬â¢ll make us lead longer and happier life.

Qualifications Or Experience Essay
Qualifications should be given more importance than experience when recruiting staff. Agree or disagree? Recruiting the correct individual for the correct job position is a key factor influencing the productivity of the organization and its success. There are many arguments about the importance of qualifications over experience for job candidates in deciding who to hire. In my point of view, experience is a greater priority than qualifications since the latter is only raw theoretical information without the knowledge of practical application. My opinion can be explained clearly by the following example: if a person, without any swimming experience, would surf the internet and learn many swimming techniques and guidelines would you expect him to jump in the water and swim like an Olympic swimmer? (Chaplin, 2013) Firstly, experienced Workers have know-how of the job. Experienced professionals have the knowledge of what has to be done. This is because they have encountered the usual situations that the job would expose them to, and they know how to deal with them. Furthermore, they are equ ipped with the necessary skills for the job: they have the technical knowledge to use the necessary technology and equipment. In addition, they also have enough work hours to have sufficient knowledge of the work place culture . Secondly, For certain jobs it is essential for managing crises on day to day bases. In such a case, experience is critical. A highly experienced workforce would be better at handling new and pressing troubles. For instance, familiarity with solutions of meticulous scenarios would come naturally to skilled and experienced employees. Also workers that have prior experience would know how to strive under complex situations and would have the know-how to control the circumstances. Thirdly, Due to having an inexperienced workforce the organization would face many employee loyalty issues and as a result, a high labour turnover which in-turn increases recruitment expenditure which consumes a lot of time that could be used more productively elsewhere. Experienced employees have a tendency to stay with their organization for a larger time. This is so that they would have greater stability and to obtain their wish to achieve a high ranking position within the firm. To save on recruitment expenditures andà for efficient time management experienced workers would beà Fourthly, even without proper qualifications employees do get hired. This is due to the fact that large organizations do their own ââ¬Å"on-the-jobâ⬠training with new employees to increase their job productivity and efficiency significantly. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) informs that under $1500 for each worker was used up for training during 1996. The major fraction of that (49 percent) was used up for technical and expert training. This money could be used for investments rather than training. Besides, even if the employee does or does not possess the qualifications, he/she would undergo the training process to standardize the quality of job performance amongst the workers. à Lastly, experienced employees would bring a lot of knowledge and clientele from rival competitors. This would mean instant revenue for the organization. Moreover, they would be capable of meeting deadlines with greater efficiency and productivity because of their wealth of experience. Furthermore, the experienced employee would be more aware of methods that contribute to a higher customer satisfaction which makes them a worthy investment. Also, there are always quarrels between employees that reduce their focus on the job. This usually does not occur with experienced employees since they are generally more mature in the work place. (Howe and Howe, 2013) Nevertheless, in certain jobs and work environments, inexperience is considered a merit. Employees with low experience would not have hard-wired views established by prior incidents. This would make them ideal for employers who like to mold their workersââ¬â¢ thinking. One might object that, an inexperienced worker might break under pressure and fail in controlling the situation. Itââ¬â¢s true that, inexperienced workers à work harder to make an impression using out of the box thinking and come up with distinctive methods to solve problems. However, they would not be efficient in their problem solving because they would not have the skills and experience to apply them. Admittedly, inexperienced workers tend to have smaller salaries this means that they are much less expensive compared to experienced workers. In contrast, the firm would eventually pay high training costs for those workers, which means that it would have been more time saving to employ experienced personnel in the first place. It would be further argued that, inexperienced workers tend to have fresh ideas. Alternatively, an inexperienced worker would take very long to come up with a suitable idea for the situation as he or she would not be familiar with scenario due to lack of experience. In conclusion, I would like to restate the points that show the dominance of experience over qualifications. Experienced workers have a greater know how of the task, they are more efficient and productive. They are better suited for crises situations since they have faced those scenarios previously. Also, they are more stable since they aim for a higher job position in the firm. Lastly, the high cost of the experienced worker would result in a lower cost in the long run since there is no need for training and they would most likely make less mistakes. These arguments show supremacy over qualification since there is added knowledge of practical application. It would be highly recommended to have a balance of both experienced and inexperienced workforce to acquire the advantages of both sidesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.Howe and Howe, 2013) Howe, T. and Howe, T. 2013. Unit7 dsc Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Unit7 dsc - Essay Example It is to be remembered that for paraphrased material, there is no need to include page or paragraph numbers. Among the best ways of integrating sources into oneââ¬â¢s writing is by using signal phrase. Signal phrases are mainly used to mark the borders between the writerââ¬â¢s words and the source material. The use of signal phrases should not leave the readers guessing why a quotation has been used in the paper. After a signal phrase has been used, it is also important to follow it up with exploiting discussions or interpretive remarks so as to provide the link with the papers argument. A good example of how to integrate sources into writing is given here. ââ¬Å"Its a good idea to embed a quotation--especially a long one--between sentences of your own.â⬠(Diana 2005). The other way is Diana (2005) stated that ââ¬Å"Its a good idea to embed a quotation--especially a long one--between sentences of your ownâ⬠(p. 98). Whenever there is a quotation of less than 40 words, it is necessary to enclose the text in double quotation marks. Additionally, ââ¬Å"quotations containing more than 40 words are indented in a block format without quotation marksâ⬠(APA, 2010, p.

Just as the tweeter has retweet functionality, the vine has refined that enhances oneââ¬â¢s followers see the video rewind. The compatibility issue for lower versions of android mobile devices is the biggest challenge with the app. Many users at first had complains about the big caching of the app as it consumed almost 2 GB of memory within a short time. Later, developers checked on the issue and moderated which brought the app to normal memory consumption with efficient functionalities. Its competitor for android, instagram is compatible with some lower versions that affect the competitiveness of vi ne for android. When considering several options, vine and instagram are more alike but their use can differ. The video length allowed by vine is six seconds that is nine seconds less than instagram and this can be a nice feature for commercials for new products for instance. With the six seconds, one can flash the products to users and leave them wanting more about it. In addition, the live interaction

Profile of al-Qa'ida and Analysis of U.S. Homeland Security Domestic Term Paper
Profile of al-Qa'ida and Analysis of U.S. Homeland Security Domestic Policy - Term Paper Example However, by the end of this war in 1988, bin Laden, his instructor Dr. Abdullah al-Azzam (who also participated in the war) and their companions started contemplating about the Islamic militancy association that had formed during the war. This is where Al-Qaââ¬â¢ida originated, which became explicit in its anti-US approach when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia wanted to give space to US troops to monitor the Iraq-Kuwait war (Kenneth Katzman, 2005). Another view is a slightly different version of the above, where Al-Qaââ¬â¢ida is said to have originated by Azzam as ââ¬Å"al-qaeda al-sulbah (a vanguard of the strong)â⬠. It was much later in 1998 when bin Laden and his associated were linked to US bombings that they formed Al-Qaââ¬â¢ida (Burke, 2004). This paper will focus on the events that followed the formulation of al-Qaââ¬â¢ida and the enmity between the West and this Islamic organization, which caused the great security syndrome. The latter part of this paper focuses on the security measures inside US homeland and an assessment that whether the policies are capable of shedding off the security threats posed to the nation, or not. Whatever the real story behind the emergence of al-Qaââ¬â¢ida may be, there is no doubt that it is an Islamic organization (not necessarily a terroristsââ¬â¢ network) that is at a strong oppositional position against the United States, and has been considered a major threat to US homeland for a long time, most explicitly since the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001. Al-Qaââ¬â¢ida does not work as an open militant force nor does any publicity that could contain its ideology or manifesto. However, its ideology and objectives are evident from most of the statements released by the group members, top leaders or Osama bin Laden himself. Since the beginning, it has been clear that al-Qaââ¬â¢ida is an anti-US group with explicit statements of opposition.

Business&Management - Managing Sustainability Essay - 1
Business&Management - Managing Sustainability - Essay Example We therefore have a task to preserve the land and environment for the generations yet unborn. However, due to the massive improvement in technology and industrialisation, there are many things that operation of many organisations does to destroy the environment. As Shakespeare puts it, the world is a stage and all of us are actors. When we are done, we will pass on and everything we have toiled for will be handed down to our children and grandchildren. If we exhaust all natural resources today, what will we leave for our children? This conference organised by Bath Spa Engineering focuses on sharing ideas and concepts relevant to environmental protection and sustainability in our operations. As stakeholders from various backgrounds we need to have an intimate understanding of the UK Governmentââ¬â¢s definition of sustainable development: ââ¬Å"Enjoying a better quality of life without compromising in the quality of life of future generationsâ⬠(Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, 2006). After the Second World War, industrialisation seemed to have taken a different turn. This kind of trend has led to a number of indicators that point to the fact that rapid action must be taken to avert any loss of natural resources to future generations. De Bruyn (2000) identifies the following: 1. Exponential Growth: The worldââ¬â¢s population has doubled over the past 30 years. This is usually attributed to the fall in infant mortality, better health care, less wars and improvements in the quality of life. It seems populations are going to increase exponentially into the future. This leads to higher demands for natural resources. 2. Increasing Pollution: The continuous increase in populations around the globe and the concurrent increase in the quality of life around the world means demand for goods has also increased. This
